This contribution presents a complete concept to control the Modular Multilevel Converter for feeding three-phase machines over their whole frequency range. The control scheme is realised by the combination of the decoupled current control and the balancing of the inner energy stored in the capacitors of the converter’s arms. The illustrated modulation schemes have to realise the generation of the pulse patterns for the cells to form the arm voltages as well as the equalisation of the energy in the cells. The dimensioning regarding the energy pulsation and the current load in the arms is added.
