2018 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE)

Abstract

Low- and medium voltage power converters for grid applications require bulky and expensive LCL-filters in order to meet the harmonic limits defined by the grid code. This paper presents a novel hybrid converter topology with smaller passive components, composed of a high power main converter with an integrated low power active filter. The presented coupled control strategies for a current-source and a voltage-source topology enable the immediate mitigation of the switching frequency current ripple, significantly decreasing the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current to below 0.5% and thereby eliminating the need for a passive LCL-filter. Compared to LCL-filter based converter systems, a reduction of the inductive component expenditure of up to 50% is achievable even for a very low active filter to main converter power rating ratio of 10%. The outstanding harmonic performance and reduced passive component demand of the hybrid converter allow increased power density and efficiency as well as lower costs of low- and medium voltage power converters.

A previously proposed converter topology can reduce component effort and converter volume by decreasing the pulsed voltage across the DC-converter inductance. However, the machines maximum phase voltage then becomes a function of the DC source voltage. In this paper, an optimization is presented to ensure a constant maximum phase voltage over a wide source voltage spread.

2018 20th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'18 ECCE Europe)

This paper presents a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) test bench for the emulation of highly utilized permanent magnet synchronous machines based on a square-wave powered Modular Multilevel Converter (SPMMC). Comparisons of the measurement results between an automotive machine and the PHIL during steady state operation and high dynamic current steps are done to show the performance of the PHIL test bench.

Abstract:

This paper compares power electronic systems (PES) concerning their suitability for system integration in the machine housing of variable speed drives (VSD). The entire PES consisting of power semiconductors, heatsink, line filter, DC-Link capacitor and clamp circuit is investigated with respect to the required volume and power losses. The following PES topologies are analyzed: Matrix Converters (MXC), Two-Level Voltage-Source- Converters (2L-VSC), Three-Level Neutral Point Clamped-VSC (3L-NPC-VSC) and Three-Level TType NPC-VSC (3L-TNPC-VSC). The PES are investigated for a mechanical power range Pmech from 10 to 40 kW with state-of-the-art power semiconductor technologies including silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) devices. Based on the investigation results, the best suited combination of converter topology and power semiconductor type is given.

This paper presents a new hybrid control approach for different control and switching frequencies for converters of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)-familiy. Using this concept it is possible to achieve a higher switching frequency and output voltage update frequency than the MMC control frequency. The closed control loop can be calculated on a digital signal processor in floating-point arithmetic. Only the resulting arm voltages and output voltages must be calculated with the switching frequency, e.g. on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) in fixed-point arithmetic.
