Currently, PM synchronous motors and induction motors are widely used for electric vehicles (EVs). In general, PM synchronous motors are more popular in private car, whereas induction motors are more frequently employed in passenger bus. The third candidate for EV application is switched reluctance motor (SRM). There are several advantages of using SRMs, such as low cost, simple and robust structure, high temperature and high-speed operation. However, the high torque ripple and noise and nonconventional inverter requirement of SRMs are unfavorable. Hence, a new type of synchronous motor with two sets of single-tooth concentrated windings on the stator is investigated. By using two windings, the conventional inverter is applicable and the torque ripple and noise can be dramatically reduced. In order to decrease the core losses, amorphous material is used.
