In the BMWK-funded BiFlow project, KIT and its partners conducted research into a novel hybrid storage concept. This approach combines a Vanadium Flow battery with a Lithium-Ion battery and incorporates an innovative heat recovery system (thermal coupling module) tested in a real-world application. The patented thermal coupling module improves the overall efficiency of the flow battery by utilizing the waste heat generated during battery operation for the building’s hot water system. It also enables storing surplus solar energy as heat in the tanks of the flow battery. Additionally, as a part of the BiFlow project, KIT developed an intelligent energy management system, demonstrating its competence and know-how in energy storage and its control—an essential element for a sustainable future.

The BiFlow system has been implemented in the student residence “Stage76” in Bruchsal. Most of the electricity comes from solar energy, generated by a 220 kWp solar installation on the roof and façade of the building. Beyond its technical achievements, the project also serves an educational purpose: it raises awareness among the students living in the residence about the importance of innovation in energy storage systems and their role in the energy transition.
